News from the Lab
All WB-RC Elementary 2-4th students are working either in ABCya, Turtle Diary, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing or Type to Learn 4. These are programs designed to introduce and demonstrate the Touch-Method of typing required by our district standards. The programs provide basic visual, audio, and tactile structure in learning the keyboard, and I teach the support strategy of Drill the Skill, which helps students develop the memory portion of their frontal lobes for internalizing key placement on the QWERTY keyboard.
These keying strategies assist students by providing them opportunities to become faster and more accurate keyboard operators. Being fast and accurate keyboard operators will afford students time-saving skills for their future educational years, and make them very marketable for their futures in the workforce. I will conference individually with students to be sure they are working toward their individual goals using their best efforts, and enlisting your help from home should that be necessary.
Students will be introduced to desktop computing using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, online tools, and as many other electronic devices they might encounter in their homerooms such as Kindles, iPads, Chrome Books, and Bright Links boards. As a class, we will learn internet safety procedures and how to protect private information and personal reputations when using internet posting sites such as social networks like, Facebook or e-mail.
